Sharing the Love (and Hate) of Your Favorite 'Downton Abbey' Characters

By Brian Moylan, Hollywood.com Staff

Downton Abbey, a Jane Austen novel that has seen one too many episodes of General Hospital, has more characters than the Queen of England has corgis. When the show returns for Season 3 on PBS this Sunday, how do you keep them all straight? Well, by the ones that we love and the ones that we hate. I passed judgement on all 16 of the show's major characters so you'll know just how to feel about the lords and ladies, maids and valets this weekend. You're welcome, m'lady.

Dear PBS: Delaying 'Downton Abbey' Is Crazy[PAGEBREAK]

LOVE

Lady Grantham: Maybe it's because she's American, but there is something about the ruling woman of the house that I always loved. She's as generous with the servants as she is with her own children, even when they're making her slip on a bar of soap and lose her baby. And she knows how to carry a dead Turk back to his room!

HATE

Lord Grantham: This landed aristocrat always thinks that he is right until he is proven wrong. He is proven wrong, well, just about every episode. He never sticks up for what he believes in and always lets the women in his life get the better of him. Why does he continue trying to be the Lord when the Ladies are always right? Just forget about all those old ways and stick to petting the dog.

LOVE

Lady Edith: The poor, misunderstood Lady Edith is always passed over for one of her impetuous sisters. She is clearly the smartest of the bunch, though she is given to acting out with married farmers and Canadian con men because no one ever bothers to pay her any heed. Don't worry, Edith, we love you and we know that you only did that awful thing to your sister Mary because she treated you so shabbily.

Next: Whom Do We Hate?[PAGEBREAK]

HATE

Lady Mary: Not only is she totally awful to her sister Edith, but this entitled brat is pretty horrible to everyone around her. She disobeys her parents, she treats her boyfriends like crap, and then she expects us to all throw ourselves at her feet and love her. I make a big fart noise at you, Lady Mary.

LOVE

Violet, the Dowager Countess: It is impossible not to love this walking quote machine and her hilarious disdain for everything around her. No one ever made being so sour look so sweet.

Next: Whom Do We Hate? [PAGEBREAK]

HATE

Isobel Crawley: I bet, if she were alive today, this goodie-two-shoes bourgeois activist would be the type of person who says at tony dinner parties, ""Well, I've never seen the Real Housewives because I don't even own a TV."" God, she's awful.

Next: Whom Do We Love?[PAGEBREAK]

LOVE

Lady Sybil: Who else would give up all her money for love? Who else would marry the chauffeur and think that was perfectly acceptable? Who else would wear pants? Who else would somehow manage to not hate Edith? Only our Sybil.

Next: Whom Do We Hate?[PAGEBREAK]

HATE

Matthew Crawley: It's mostly for being paralyzed and then miraculously walking again. OK, who am I fooling, it's mostly because he dissed Lady Edith for Lady Mary. God, doesn't he know where the true genius lies? He also has a bad habit of poo-pooing the ways of Downton and then caving to them. Where is your moral center man?

Next: Whom Do We Love?[PAGEBREAK]

LOVE

Anna: The only thing Lady Mary has going for her is the sweetness of her maid. Anna stays true to her friends through thick and thin if they're getting eye surgery or going to prison for murder, it's all the same to Anna. You gotta love her for her essential goodness.

Next: Whom Do We Hate?[PAGEBREAK]

HATE

Bates: Anna is the best woman on the show and he won't tell her he can't marry her because he has a no good wife. Then when he does tell her, the wife won't go away. And then when the wife goes away, he goes to prison for murdering her. God, Bates, couldn't you do this to someone we don't even like?

Next: Whom Do We Love? [PAGEBREAK]

LOVE

Mrs. Patmore: You know that teacher you had in 6th grade who was kinda mean, but you liked her anyway and then you grew up and realized that everything she was mean to you about was totally right? That's Mrs. Patmore. And she makes a mean pudding.

Next: Whom Do We Hate?[PAGEBREAK]

HATE

Daisy: Oh my god, if there were a more ineffectual creature on Earth, I would hate to know it. Daisy can't do anything right including her job, lying, telling the truth, falling in love, falling out of love, being true to the one man who loved her, falling in love with a gay guy, putting soap in the servant's soup. And then, when she messes things up, she cries about it. Daisy is really the absolute worst.

Next: Whom Do We Love?[PAGEBREAK]

LOVE

Thomas: Like Lady Edith upstairs the devilish Thomas isn't necessarily evil, he's just misunderstood. OK, he is evil, but he's evil because he's gay and no one will accept him. It's not that he hates everyone, it's that he hates himself because society has told him to. I would just like to give Thomas a big hug and tell him it's all going to be OK.

Next: Whom Do We Hate?[PAGEBREAK]

HATE

O'Brien: Remember how I said Thomas was just misunderstood? Well, this bitch is just evil.

Next: Whom Do We Love?[PAGEBREAK]

LOVE

Mrs. Hughes: She is always right. Period. The End.

Next: Whom Do We Hate?[PAGEBREAK]

HATE

Carson: Carson never has enough staff and what staff he does have always seems to be getting into some sort of trouble. No matter how often he apologizes for something someone did, they all still trust him and expect him to give the sage advice of the common man. It is often wrong. Also, he has a creepy fixation on Lady Mary that might land him in prison one day.
