WAUSAU, Wis (WSAU) The Marathon County Sheriffs Department is telling drivers to ignore an email that's been making the rounds on the internet about car tires being tampered with. It has the subject line "Women of Wausau Beware". It's a hoax.

The email claims that 'shady characters' have been with the women whose cars have been tampered with.

The email started off as a legitimate concern. A tow-truck driver reported earlier this week that he'd received three calls this week from drivers who'd had the left front tires mysteriously come off their cars. He reported that to the sheriffs department. Dispatchers advised deputies and other law enforcement agencies to report any similar incidents. So far none have come in.

The email that's been circulating had the subject line changed and several facts surrounding the case altered. The sheriffs department says they don't believe the public is at risk.
