Teacher convicted of child porn gets 3 years in prison, extended supervision

EAGLE RIVER, WI (WXPR) -  The Northland Pines middle school math teacher found guilty of possessing child pornography on his school computer will spend the next three years in prison. After three years in prison, Michael Wang will be under extended supervision for five years. He must also register as a sex offender.

Wang received his sentence Wednesday afternoon from Vilas County Circuit Court Judge Neal Nielsen. Ironically, it was Wong’s personal apology that influenced Judge Nielsen’s decision to send him to prison. Nielsen noted that Wong apologized to children in general, not the specific children he had hurt by what Neilson characterized as his sexually disordered conduct.

Wang was found guilty last year of two out of 10 charges of possession of child pornography. But it was his “computer chats” with girls 14 years of age and younger that concerned Special Prosecutor David Maas during sentencing. Maas said these “chats” were evidence that Wong was grooming young girls. Wang had been out of jail on $5000 bail since he was charged in May, 2011. He was taken into custody immediately following sentencing.

Michael Wang taught at the school in Eagle River for 20 years.
