WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) - Wausau’s school board is going forward with a Stettin Elementary expansion project.

The school board voted 5-3 Monday night in favor of the nearly $700,000 project, which will add two more classrooms to the crowded elementary building.

A recent study of the school district found that Stettin is the school in the district facing the worst overcrowding, especially as more children start to enter kindergarten. School board president Michelle Schaefer says the choice was to move ahead with expanding the school. "This is just the option that worked best for us."

Some board members expressed concern about using the district’s fund balance to pay for the construction, since that is the money set aside to handle operating costs before state aid payments come in. Board member Dale Lawson says the balance is now at about 22.2 million dollars.

The final costs and designs for the Stettin expansion are expected at next month’s school board meeting.
