Gun powder explodes during house fire in northwest Wisconsin

by

TOWN OF CLEVELAND, WI (WTAQ) - Firefighters in northwest Wisconsin got quite a surprise as they were putting out a house fire Thursday – the sounds of gun powder exploding.

Cornell assistant fire chief Steve Boulding said the house had 2,500 rounds of ammunition in about the same spot. And crews could hear some of it popping, while the house was lifted up from the impact.

The home was located west of Cornell in the Chippewa County town of Cleveland.

Units were called about 12:50 p.m. Thursday.

Boulding said the house was engulfed in flames when fire-fighters got there – and the structure collapsed a short time later.

Two other fire departments helped battle the blaze. The exact cause remains under investigation. No injuries were reported.
