MADISON< WI (WSAU) The Wisconsin women’s basketball team upset seventh-ranked Penn State last night, 63-to-61 in Madison. Tiera Stephen scored the game-winner on a put-back with six seconds left. And Alex Bentley missed a layup at the buzzer for the Lady Lions, giving the Badgers their first win over a nationally-ranked opponent in just over three years.
Stephen, a senior, tied a career-high with 11 rebounds. Junior Morgan Paige led Wisconsin in scoring with a career-high 33 points, including five from three-point range. Penn State ended an 11-game winning streak – and the loss came just two weeks after the Lady Lions blew out the Badgers by 44 points, giving Wisconsin its most lopsided defeat since 1994.
Maggie Lucas scored 18 for Penn State, which lost its first Big Ten conference game and is now 7-and-1. The Lions are also 17-and-3 overall.
Wisconsin came into last night’s game losing seven-of-its-last-eight. It’s been a rough season for Bobbie Kelsey’s Badgers. Only nine players have been dressing since two players had season-ending injuries and two others transferred.
The Badgers are now 10-and-11 overall, and 2-and-6 in the conference. They’ll host Illinois on Sunday.
