MERRILL, Wis (WSAU)   The Lincoln County Humane Society has been overwhelmed with adoption papers for the 56 puppies surrendered to them last weekend. A couple that had been breeding the dogs was evicted from a home they'd been renting on Highway J. They surrendered the animals voluntarily. No criminal charges will be filed; they'd been working with sheriffs deputies trying to get a kennel license.

So far more than 300 people have filled out adoption applications. The shelter says it’s also looking for a donated computer printer and paper, in addition to puppy formula and food to care for the dogs.

It will still be a few more days before the first adoptions can take place. The animals need to be checked by a veterinarian and be spayed or neutered. The cost of fixing the animals will be at least $8,000. They're looking for cash donations to cover those expenses.
