Property tax payments coming in

People are spending money on Christmas gifts, but that’s not the only thing people are paying for this time of year. Many are paying their property taxes.

December and January are when most property owners pay their property taxes, and there is a reason some pay now and others pay later. Stevens Point Comptroller-Treasurer Corey Laddick says it depends on your tax strategy. “As long as you pay it by December 31st, then you can deduct it on your 2013 income taxes, so that’s the main reason why people would pay their taxes a little bit earlier than they have to.”

Most municipalities still allow you to stop in and pay taxes in person, but Laddick says more and more communities are expanding the use of technology to make paying more convenient. “One option we have that’s become a lot more popular is the automatic withdrawal option. We just need people to set it up the first time with us. Fill out a real simple piece of paper to have it automatically withdrawn out of your checking account, and then you can continue to do that every year.”

Laddick says they get most of the property tax payments in December and January, with about the same number of people stopping in each month.
