MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- The Wisconsin Badgers hockey team picked up a win on home ice against one of their old WCHA rivals Friday with a 4-1 win over Colorado College.
The game was scoreless after twenty minutes, but the action picked up in the second period as the Badgers picked up two goals on four power plays. Joseph LaBate scored on a power play at 8:17 in the second period to put Wisconsin up 1-0. Colorado College evened it up with a breakaway goal at 15:45, and the Badgers took the lead again with just seconds left in the period. Nick Kerdiles scored just before the end of the period.
In the third period, it was more from the Badgers. Senior Michael Mersch scored his 100th career point as a Badger at 5:14. That was his ninth goal of the year.
The Badgers had to fight through two 5-on-3 penalty kills. The were also 2-4 in the power play, compared to 0-3 for Colorado College. The Badgers had 29 shots on goal compared to Colorado College’s 26 shots on goal. Badger goalie Joel Rumpel had 25 saves.
The two teams meet again at the Kohl Center Saturday evening. The game will be broadcast on WSAU 550 AM and 99.9 FM starting with pre-game activities at 6:30 p.m. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
