Weston woman faces federal charges for stealing son's disability checks

by

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - A Weston woman is being charged in federal court for stealing disability checks from her disabled son.

Officials with Social Secuirty say 54 year old Susan Schepp wrongfully collected checks on her son's disability after he was supposed to have stopped receiving them. Assistant U.S. Attorney Bob Anderson says Schepp continued the scam for a number of years. "She converted the benefits to her own use and continued to do that until September of 2008, but he didn't discover it until a few years later and then reported it to Social Security."

Anderson says cases like this can take some time to build. "Social Security will look at their records at what was paid out and where it went, and then there's some forensic accounting to determine where those payments went once they arrived where they're sent to."

If convicted, Schepp faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison. Future court dates have not been set.
