New doctors take up residency at Aspirus

by

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) - Six new Family Medicine doctors are making the rounds at Aspirus.

It's part of Aspirus' resident physician program. Residency director Dr. Kevin O'Connell says the residency program helps refine what medical students end up practicing in the future. "They come out as generalists, as folks who are able to any kind of medicine with specialized training. Residency is where you get that specialized training."

The students at Aspirus are all training to become Family Medicine doctors, who are able to treat and diagnose a wide range of cases. O'Connell says that makes them extremely useful to central and northern Wisconsin. "These are places where you just need to be seen by a doctor and might not need more specialized care."

O'Connell says bringing medical students to Central Wisconsin will increase the likelihood of them sticking around. "Of our graduates, greater than 2/3rds of them stay in the state of Wisconsin and about 35% of the graduates are in a 100 mile radius of Wausau."

You can find out more about the program at aspirus.org/residency.
