GREEN BAY, WI (LEARFIELD-WSAU) Packers’ rookie Micah Hyde will get a chance this week to become Green Bay’s punt returner for the regular season opener at San Francisco on September eighth.
Hyde, a fifth-round rookie corner, returned punts during his final two college seasons at Iowa with a career average of almost eight-yards per return. He caught over a dozen punts at practice yesterday without a muff.
Hyde is being given an opportunity because Green Bay’s other possible punt returners have not exactly shined at Training Camp. Randall Cobb has been dealing with an injured bicep. Jeremy Ross and rookie Johnathan Franklin have both struggled in their auditions.
Coach Mike McCarthy says Hyde is a “great example” of what a punt returner should be. He did not drop any of his 13 punt returns during his senior year at Iowa. Hyde had a 13-yard punt return on Saturday night at Saint Louis.
