STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) - Portage County health officials have confirmed that a bird has died of West Nile virus.

The dead crow was found July 25th. The positive test is the first one since screening started in May.

West Nile is spread to humans and other mammals through infected mosquito bites. The virus can be hazardous to people with weakened immune systems. Residents should take appropriate precautions to prevent mosquito bites, including using bug repellant and making sure the bugs don't have stagnant water to breed in.

If you have questions about the virus, call the health department at 715-345-5958
