DNR survey crew captures, releases two lake sturgeons from Milwaukee River

MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - A survey crew with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources captured, tagged and released two lake sturgeons about four feet long Monday in the Milwaukee River.

DNR fisheries personnel were studying walleye and northern pike. A sturgeon restoration project has been conducted on the river in recent years.

The experts say the fish caught Monday was likely stocked before that project started.

Lake sturgeon are native to Lake Michigan and used to make their spawning runs up the Milwaukee River. However, the big fish disappeared more than 100 years ago due to overfishing and the destruction of their habitat.
