WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) - Everyone is alright after a fire at a Wisconsin Rapids elderly care facility Saturday at Arborview Court.
Nurse Administrator Karen Trzebiatowski says the damage was contained to one resident’s room. “The alarm system went off. You go to the panel and you can see which room it is, and what was happening was the sprinkler system was already doing what it was supposed to do, and it was putting out the fire. There was a fire in the rocking chair, and it was only contained to the rocking chair.”
Trzebiatowski says staff practices emergency drills hoping they never need to do them for real, but it happened, and everyone got it right. “Staff started evacuation. By the time the fire department got there, the fire was obviously out and the residents were already being evacuated to the other building.”
Two people did go the hospital for examination as a precaution. “One of the elderly people tripped and fell. She was not hurt, but we wanted her to be checked out. She did go to the emergency room. They did check her out and she returned. Nothing was broken.” The other person that was seen at the hospital was a staff member who was exposed to the smoke. She was also sent home after a doctor’s examination.
Forty-nine residents were temporarily were moved to Arborwood Lodge, a residential care apartment complex next to Arborview. After supper, they were able to return to their own building.
