MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) “K-Rod” is back in the Brewers’ organization. Francisco Rodriguez was signed to a minor league contract yesterday. The Brewers have 30 days to either promote the veteran reliever to the big club, or release him.
The 31-year-old Rodriguez will train at the Brewers’ extended spring training camp in Phoenix before he gets an assignment. C-B-S Sports said he could make over two-million dollars this year if he’s called up by the Crew.
General manager Doug Melvin denies that he signed K-Rod in response to John Axford’s troubles in the early going this year. Melvin called it a low-risk move that was discussed at spring training.
Rodriguez struggled for much of last season with Milwaukee, going 2-and-7 in 78 appearances as both a closer and a set-up man with a four-point-three-eight E-R-A. He has not pitched since then, except for a stint with his native Venezuela in last month’s World Baseball Classic.
