Marathon corrections officers recognized Tuesday

by

WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) -  One of Marathon County’s corrections officers was honored for bravery by the County Board Tuesday. Denney Woodward was one of the jail staff involved in the attack initiated by inmate Frederic Morris on March 27th.

Woodward was given the Sheriff’s Commendation Award, although he has mixed feelings knowing one of his partners is still hospitalized. Corrections officer Julie Christensen is still at Aspirus Wausau Hospital in intensive care after being knocked unconscious in the attack.

Woodward credits good training for keeping a bad situation from getting worse. The 12-year veteran told the County Board that changes have been made at the jail, but he’s not sure anything would have been different had they been armed with tasers that day.

Christensen continues to slowly recover. She will receive a Purple Heart once she is out of the hospital.
