UPDATE: NAME RELEASED
WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) - The Merrill man involved in a Monday motorcycle crash on Highway 51 near Brokaw has died. 51-year-old Gerrald Russell was taken to Aspirus Wausau Hospital, where he passed away at about 5:00 a.m. Tuesday.
Marathon County Sheriff's investigators are still looking into the cause of the crash. The motorcycle has been impounded, and they are doing a toxicology screening on Russell to see if anything may have contributed to the crash.
Russell drove his motorcycle at highway speed into the median about a half mile north of the Brokaw exit while northbound on Highway 51 just after 6:00 p.m. Monday evening.
BROKAW, WI (WSAU) - A motorcyclist is hospitalized after crashing near Brokaw Monday evening. Marathon County Sheriff’s Lieutenant Randy Albert says the crash happened just after 6:00 p.m. close to Exit 197 in the northbound lanes of Highway 51. “Investigators are not on scene anymore. They’re in the process of gathering more information on past history for the person, and what the person was doing during the day before the crash.”
The driver is a 51-year-old man from Merrill. His name hasn’t been released, but Albert says he is in serious condition. “The motorcycle entered the median, where he was ejected from the motorcycle. He was transported to Aspirus Wausau Hospital with severe injuries.”
One of the northbound lanes was closed for a few hours to accommodate clean up efforts. The cause of the crash has not been determined.
The motorcycle has been impounded until investigators complete their work.
