Gov. Walker names Tom Evenson as new spokesman

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Governor Scott Walker will have a new spokesman starting on Monday.

Cullen Werwie has been Walker’s chief spokesman ever since the Republican governor took office at the start of 2011. Now, Werwie is moving into a new position that will coordinate media activities among state agencies, as the communications liaison for the state Administration Department.

Tom Evenson, the current spokesman for Senate GOP leader Scott Fitzgerald, will take the same job in the governor’s office starting Monday.

It’s been a hectic tenure for Werwie, dating back to 2010 when he worked on Brett Davis’ failed GOP campaign for lieutenant governor. He joined Walker during his successful 2010 campaign for governor.

Werwie has been among Walker’s chief voices during a hectic time in which Republicans virtually ended most public union bargaining – thus triggering a recall election which the governor won last June.

Along the way, Werwie received immunity from prosecution in connection with now-closed John Doe probe into Walker’s former aides when he was the Milwaukee County executive.
