MADISON, WI (WSAU) Wisconsin defensive end David Gilbert will not start tomorrow night at Nebraska, because of critical comments he made about Cornhuskers’ quarterback Taylor Martinez. On Wednesday, Gilbert told reporters that the Badger defense will have to stop the run because Martinez quote, “isn’t going to beat us throwing the ball.” Gilbert also criticized Martinez’s sidearm throwing style, saying quote, “It still looks like he’s skipping rocks out there.”
Coach Bret Bielema said Gilbert’s comments do not represent who the Badgers are – and he constantly reminds his players that they have back up on the field what they say to reporters during the week.
That may not be easy against Martinez, who worked to improve his footing and throwing motion since last October – when he threw three interceptions in a 48-to-17 loss to Wisconsin. This year, Martinez is completing 71-percnt of his passes with nine touchdowns and only one pick.
As for Gilbert, he may not sit out very long. The Badgers only have three other backups on the defensive line due to injuries. Badgers’ running back Montee Ball has been cleared to play in tomorrow night’s Big Ten opener at Nebraska. Coach Bret Bielema says the senior Ball is at “100-percent full go” after he suffered a head injury last weekend against Texas El-Paso. Ball was a full participant at practice yesterday, with full contact. He had limited contact at practice on Wednesday.
