Parents urged to make Halloween safe for kids

UNDATED (WSAU) -  Many trick-or-treaters will be out tonight, and there are things you can do to make your little witches and goblins safer. American Red Cross officials urge parents to think about how safe costumes are for kids. Regional CEO Tom Mooney says you should always use flame-resistant costumes. You should also add reflective tape to costumes and treat bags, and use face makeup instead of masks. Mooney says these precautions help kids see and be seen better.

Mooney says parents should accompany younger kids, and it’s always a good idea to carry a flashlight. He adds parents should coach kids to visit only homes with the yardlight on and to never go inside the house to get the candy. Children should also avoid unfamiliar pets, alleys, and obstacles they can trip over.
