Cargo shipping comes to a halt on Lake Michigan

by

UNDATED, WI (WTAQ) - Cargo shipping came to a halt today on the Great Lakes, because of the strong winds from Superstorm Sandy.

Glen Nekvasil of the Lake Carriers Association said he couldn’t think of a single shipping boat on any of the Great Lakes Tuesday – including Lakes Michigan and Superior that straddle Wisconsin.

Robert Lewis-Manning of the Canadian Ship-Owners Association said the same thing happened on that country’s Great Lakes waters. He said the waves are much higher than shippers have seen in a long time.

Waves that were up to two stories high forced shipping crews to take refuge in harbors and bays throughout the Midwest. For some, it brought back memories of 1975 – when a vicious storm sank the Edmund Fitzgerald in eastern Lake Superior, and 29 crew members died.

The 37th anniversary of that tragedy will be observed on November 10th.
