MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) Three Milwaukee Brewers became the first on the team to file for free agency today. They are shortstop Alex Gonzalez, starter Shaun Marcum, and reliever Francisco Rodriguez.
Gonzalez was lost for the year in May when he tore an A-C-L knee ligament. General manager Doug Melvin said at the end of the season that the team would most likely go with Jean Segura next season.
Marcum was out for two months this season with problems in his throwing elbow, and he was not expected to return to Milwaukee next season. Rodriguez had an inconsistent season, and was not expected to come back either.
Also today, the Brewers activated Gonzalez from the 60-day disabled list along with first baseman Mat Gamel and starter Chris Narveson – both of whom were out for most of the season with serious injuries.
