WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) - Wausau’s planned expansion of Thomas Street will have to wait because Federal Highway Administration officials are not satisfied with city actions. A letter from the U.S. Department of Transportation claims Wausau did not comply with the Uniform Act in acquiring Right of Way. That’s the rule that is supposed to protect people impacted by federally-funded road projects. The letter criticizes Wausau for failing to properly advise homeowners of their rights, including the right to moving assistance, when the land is being taken for a road. Federal officials say there is no documentation to show this was properly done.
This stalls the expansion of Thomas Street from 17th Avenue to the Wisconsin River. The City of Wausau was depending on federal funding for this project, and it’s unsure if they will get that funding now.
