WAUSAU, Wis (WSAU) There are more water leaks in a section of pipe near 14th Avenue on Wausau's west side. The city's water works had been losing up to 1-million gallons a day before that pipe was shut down.
The pipe itself is in a wetlands area near Bos Creek. And while some pipes in the city are 120 years old, this section was installed only 30 years ago. Soil erosion could be causing the problem - or the pipe might have been bad when it was installed.
Repairs should be completed by Friday. The cost of repairing the leak is estimated at $170,000. Mayor Jim Tipple says water rates will not be going up to cover those expenses.
