ANTIGO, Wis (WSAU) Antigo is the latest community to pass a 'social host ordinance' to crack down on underage drinking parties. Parents and property owners can now face fines if they provide alcohol to minors. The goal is to crack down on so-called 'take the keys' parties where parents allow kids to drink as long as they give up their car keys for the night and promise not to drive.
The fine for first-offenders is $450, and prosecutors would have the discretion to bring criminal charges.
The Action Alliance of Langlade County pushed for the change. They say in recent years many parents have hosted graduation or summer parties where there was underage drinking at their barns, cabins, or homes.
