Stevens Point police arrest two for counterfeiting, more anticipated

STEVENS POINT, Wis (WSAU) - Several businesses in Stevens Point have been hurt by counterfeit 50-dollar bills over the past week.

Stevens Point Police Detective Sargent Tony Babl says arrests have been made, and more are anticipated. So far, one man and one woman are in custody.

The suspects made small purchases, but paid with fake 50s, hoping to get real money in return.

Police say most of the fake bills were passed on the city's south side. They say anyone who handles money or works a cash register should pay close attention to the bills that they handle, and should use a counterfeit pen if they suspect a bill isn't authentic.

The Hardee's Restaurant, O'Reilly Auto Parts, and South Point Restaurant were all victimized. Police say one business, Big Hunchies Roadhouse, had a bartender who noticed that the bill was a fake.

Police believe it's a small but organized counterfeiting ring.
