Wisconsin gun sales still through the roof after anniversary of conceal carry

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Gun sales are still booming in Wisconsin, almost 13 months after law-abiding residents were allowed to start carrying concealed weapons.

The state Justice Department was asked to perform required background checks on 117,000 hand-gun buyers from January through last Tuesday.  That’s a 63% increase from a year ago.

That figure doesn’t count those who buy their weapons at gun shows or from other individuals.  Those sales don’t require background checks.

On Black Friday, gun sales were at a record nationally – and the state said it got 11-hundred requests for background checks that day.

The national checking system was so swamped that it broke down twice last Friday – and it churned slowly at other times.

The NRA said the sales jump was spurred by President Obama’s re-election, with buyers fearful of losing gun rights in a second Obama administration – even though it didn’t happen in the first.

One Dane County gun dealer calls the president quote, “our best salesman.”
