PLOVER, WI (WSAU) -  A mobile home fire southeast of Plover Friday morning has left one person dead. Portage County Sheriff’s Department says a motorist on Highway 54 spotted smoke coming from the trailer at Birch Tree Estates. The motorist was Michael Johnson of Plover, and he turned into the trailer park while alerting authorities, then started banging on doors to alert the nearby neighbors to go to safety.

Plover, Whiting, Bancroft, and Stockton firefighters arrived at 7:09 a.m. to a home fully-engulfed in flames. Neighbors reported that three women, a man, and a teenaged boy lived there and it was likely one of the women was still inside. After nearly an hour and a half, firefighters found one of the residents dead. The identity of the victim is not being released until positive identification can be made. The victim’s body has been sent to Madison for a forensic autopsy.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
