Child hit by car, driver caught

WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) -  A 16-year-old Rib Mountain motorist is facing charges after colliding with a young child. The incident happened at 3:45 p.m. after classes were finished at Rib Mountain Elementary School Thursday.

Sheriff’s Lieutenant Randy Albert says the young girl was very lucky.  "That girl was transported to Aspirus Wausau Hospital.  They suspected possible broken bones, but there were no broken bones located.  She suffered mainly bumps, bruises, and contusions.”  Albert says the victim fell backwards into two other schoolmates after being struck by the car.

Lieutenant Albert says several people gave officers enough information to figure out who the driver was.  Deputies and a Wisconsin State Patrol trooper went to a Rib Mountain residence, where they believed they would find the suspect and the car.  Albert says they were allowed to inspect the vehicle and found damage consistent with hitting a pedestrian.  "The 16-year-old driver was confronted with this information and admitted he had been making this turn, and claimed that he did not see anyone due to the sun being in his eyes.  After realizing he had struck the pedestrian, he panicked."

Neither the driver or the victim’s names have been released since they are both juveniles. The driver was cited for hit and run causing injury and could face additional charges.

The incident happened at Robin Lane and County Highway R.   A crossing guard was present.
