DNR reminds hunters to get permission before entering private property

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WSAU) - The Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters to respect the property rights of landowners as they head out into the woods to hunt this weekend.

Warden Scott Thiede says knowing if you're trespassing is your own responsibility. "You cannot enter private property just to pursue deer just because that deer is wounded." Thiede says that there's plenty of public land, and also private property that's been opened up for limited public use.

The DNR has maps that will direct you to local public or allowed private property hunting lands. Thiede says that a smartphone can be the best tool to help keep you legal and in the right when you are out in the woods. "Just head to our website and search for BPA or managed forest law land." Most smartphones also come equipped with accurate GPS mapping tools that will help you know if you're closing in on private land.

But Thiede says the best tool is to simply get in contact with the landowner near where you hunt. "People put a lot of time into preparing a deer hunt, and they should be able to spend that time to talk with local landowners and get that permission ahead of time."

More information is available online at http://DNR.wi.gov and search for hunting maps.
