Wood County passes '13 budget, opposes Saratoga mega dairy

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) The Wood County Board passed their budget for 2013 when they met in Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday.

The tax rate residents will pay for next year will stay the same at $4.69 for every $1,000 of equalized property value. Pete Hendler, the Vice-Chair of the Board’s Executive Committee, said the whole budget process went very smoothly considering the tough economic times.

Also approved by the Wood County Board was a zoning ordinance opposing the Wysoki mega-dairy planned for the Town of Saratoga.

Board member Ed Wagner says that while that ordinance makes it more difficult for the proposed farm to move forward, it doesn’t necessarily stop it either. According to Wagner, “The vote went 15 to 4 and I think the people who were opposed to it felt that it was probably too restrictive, but a lot of the commissioners who spoke on it, spoke in favor of it in the sense that it was self-determination for the township.” Many Saratoga residents say they hope the new ordinance stops the planning for the large-scale dairy operation.
