Wausau Curling Club building nearly done

WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) -  Wausau Curling Club’s new facility is nearing completion. The site is on Curling Way off Kent Street, right next to the Holtz-Krause Landfill site which is about to become a soccer and outdoor sports complex.

Perry Gruber with the Wausau Curling Club says the new facility will allow the club to extend the curling season and perhaps work with soccer clubs to utilize their site during tournaments for things like food service.

Gruber expects the club to start making ice soon with a state-of-the-art refrigeration system in the floor that should help them maintain playing ice with fewer mechanical problems and less energy.

He says they expect to start getting the building ready to occupy yet this week, but they know there will be unfinished work to complete after the curling season starts. The new building has much more room than the old rink at Marathon Park. Gruber says even some long-time Wausau Curling Club members may be surprised by the scale of the new facility. The facility will allow for eight games at once.

The 41-thousand square foot clubhouse and 20-thousand square foot Olympic sized playing surface cost just over 3-million dollars. League play is scheduled to begin in the new building November 30th.  A rookie clinic for new players and anyone that wants to learn about the sport is December 1st.
