Sentencing Monday in texting & driving death

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) -  Sentencing is today for the Wisconsin Rapids man who caused a fatal traffic crash by text messaging while driving. 23-year-old John French is already incarcerated, but he will find out just how long at a 10:30 a.m. hearing in Wood County Court.

French was convicted of 2nd degree reckless homicide for a December 2010 crash that killed 32-year-old Robert Walker of rural Wisconsin Rapids. French ran a stop sign at Highways 73 and “Z” on December 6th, 2010, just six days after a much-heralded state law took effect banning texting while driving.

Judge Todd Wolf ordered a presentence investigation after the verdict was handed down in September. Attorneys for both sides asked for nine years in prison followed by eight years of extended supervision. Judge Wolf will determine if that is appropriate this morning.
