MERRILL, WI (WSAU) -  Two men are facing charges after being caught poaching deer Saturday. Lincoln County deputies were called to a Town of Merrill neighborhood near Swede Road just after 7:00 p.m. by a resident that heard a gunshot. Deputies arrived and found a 20-year-old Merrill man and a 36-year-old Ogema man skinning a spike buck. They initially told officers they shot it with a bow, but Department of Natural Resources wardens arrived and examined the carcass. That’s when the two men admitted shooting it with a rifle after targeting it with a spotlight. Wardens confiscated the 30-30 rifle.  Their names will be released after formal charges are filed in Lincoln County Monday.

Sheriff’s deputies are also getting other hunting complaints. Lincoln County has several reports of tree stand thefts, and several complaints about trespassing and erecting tree stands on private property. They’re also getting complaints about hunters illegally using tree stands or climbing pegs on county forest land.
