Marquette Faces Buckeyes In Opener

CHARLESTON, SC (WSAU) The Marquette men’s basketball team opens its regular season tonight against fourth-ranked Ohio State on the former U-S-S Yorktown aircraft carrier off Charleston North Carolina.

The Golden Eagles practiced yesterday on the flight deck of a ship that served the U-S in World War Two and Vietnam, and has been a museum for the past 37 years. It’s part of the second annual “Carrier Classic,” which also features a women’s basketball game. The event will benefit a number of military charities, and around four-thousand fans will be on hand.

Marquette coach Buzz Williams was given a 90-minute tour of the Yorktown yesterday. He said it was an “unbelievable” feeling to be invited to the event and quote, “We’re not deserving of being here.” Williams said he feels an intense pride to quote, “represent our country in a small, small way.”

He’s also been trying to figure out how to upset Ohio State, which has one of the most powerful offenses in the country. The Eagles will try to emphasize defense to keep the Buckeyes in check. And Williams hopes his team can shoot better than 32-percent – their percentage in last year’s N-C-A-A Sweet 16 game which they lost to Florida.

The game starts at six this evening on the N-B-C Sports cable network. Ohio State is one of 15 nationally-ranked teams opening their regular seasons tonight.

The U-W Milwaukee men are also in action at home against the University of Mary. And the Milwaukee women open at Chicago State.
