Fired Milwaukee police officer guilty of violating woman's civil rights

A federal court jury found a fired Milwaukee police officer guilty of one count, and innocent of another in the raping of a female crime victim soon after she called 9-1-1. The jury convicted 44-year-old Ladmarald Cates this afternoon of violating the woman’s civil rights while on police duty. But he was cleared on a charge of using a firearm in committing violence. Cates had encountered the woman in two traffic stops before she call police about vandals throwing rocks-and-bricks through her window in the summer of 2010. Prosecutors said Cates sexually assaulted the victim soon after he responded to the 9-1-1 call. But the fired officer testified that the sex was consensual. Cates faces life in prison, but he’s expected to get much less under federal sentencing guidelines for judges. His term is expected to be lengthened, however, because the jury approved enhanced penalties for causing injury and aggravated sexual abuse.
