MERRILL, Wis. (WSAU) – Merrill city council members will get a look at options to revamp the fire stations in the city tonight.

The committee of the whole has asked Becher and Hoppe architects to come in and go over options for the two current fire stations in the city. Assistant fire chief Steve Hintz says the problem is that the main fire station downtown is obsolete. “We've got pictures on the wall of when this building still held horses, that's how old it is.” The century-old fire station is also penned in downtown by the city's expansion over the years, making it harder to get to fires.

There are a number of options on the table including renovation of the existing stations or building an entirely new location for the fire department. Hintze says they're involved. “We've been talking with Becher and Hoppe the whole way through, giving them input on what we'd need to operate.”

Tonight's meeting gets underway at 5:30.
