STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) - Police across the state are getting ready for a possible spike in drunken driving New Years Eve night.
In Portage County, officials are going to be treating like any other night. Portage County sheriff's captain Dale O'Kray says he cold weather could ease arrests. "In years past we've seen more house parties, people staying over instead of going to the bar and then trying to drive home." He says the weather does play a factor, but that a normal patrol will be in place.
O'Kray says the number of drunk drivers has gone down in the county. "I don't know if the numbers in the bars are going down, but I think people are getting the message." He says the county is seeing more of a use of the Safe Ride home programs with the Tavern League.
The Captain also reminds families that hosting underaged drinking parties either in their home at another location is illegal and can get you a citation.
