All veterinarians required to report vaccinations on Wausau based pets

WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) -  Wausau’s City Council passed another ordinance related to the animal control program. The special meeting took less than two minutes, and had only one agenda item... an ordinance requiring all veterinarians to report licenses and vaccinations of dogs and cats that reside in the Wausau city limits.

Council President Lisa Rasmussen supports the new ordinance.  She says the data will be used to track pets and to make sure pets and people are protected from health issues.  Rasmussen says the new ordinance will take effect as soon as it is published, since 2013 licenses are on sale now.

Rasmussen says veterinarians from outside of Wausau need to pay attention to where the pets are coming from, because this affects them too.  "The ordinance states that each veterinarian shall submit vaccination data.  It does not say that the veterinarian has to be housed in Wausau, so if that veterinarian is servicing Wausau pets, they should also be reporting."

Alderman Keene Winters says all of the pieces are in place for Wausau, and next is the implementation process for the animal control program.  "The next step is to get together as a group of ten municipalities who are going to do this and really talk about how exactly we're going to implement it.”

Wausau residents are reminded that if you have more than two dogs and three cats, you have a limited opportunity to get them licensed and vaccinated now without penalties and without forfeiting the pets... but once that grandfather period expires, there will be penalties. This only applies to pets already in a household since November 1st. You cannot hurry up and get more pets under the grandfather clause.
