Experts say backup generators need professional installation

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - If a backup electrical generator was on your Christmas list this year, officials are asking you to get a professional to hook it up.

WE Energies spokesman Brian Manthey says that any backup generator hooked up to your mainline should only be installed by a trained electrician. "What can happen is it'll be installed in a way that if the generator turns on, it could feed back down the line in a way that could harm a linesman restoring power." Manthey says that those generators also need to be properly attached to your houses wiring so that they don't blow out the wires in your walls.

There's also possible danger from pull-start gas generators. Manthey says those smaller units should only be used outside. "If you've got them running inside, there's a chance that you could fill the house with carbon monoxide and essentially gas yourself." Manthey says outside also means away from attached garages, which can still fill your home with fumes.

You can get more info on installing those generators by calling your local utility, or logging on to http://www.we-energies.com/.
