MADISON, WI (WSAU) -  Have you ever wondered how to say something, but didn’t know who to ask? That happens once in awhile when you work in radio or television.

Now, a resource for getting names and places right the first time has been improved. It’s a website called Misspronouncer-dot-com. Jackie Johnson has been a radio news reporter, anchor and personality around Wisconsin, and you probably recognize her name from some Wisconsin Radio Network stories heard on WSAU. Jackie’s other project is the misspronouncer website.

Johnson says she started Misspronouncer-dot-com about six years ago because there was a need to know how to properly say Wisconsin names and places.  She had many pronunciations available, but as she was working to upgrade the site, Johnson got together with the state’s cartographer who was mapping Wisconsin’s many unincorporated communities. That’s when the two projects came together.  "There are many, many of them and they don't get the recognition  that the other cities, villages, etc. get.  They are unincorporated.  They are not recognized by census data, and they decided to put them all together on a map.   Then they wanted to take it a step further." with Misspronouncer.

Johnson says the Misspronouncer website is very easy to use.  If you pass the computer mouse over the map, it automatically plays the audio.

Misspronouncer-dot-com has been a great resource for school districts as well as the media.
