Stevens Point nearly finished with WEDC "Certified" program preparation


STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) -  Twenty seven Wisconsin cities have applied for a new state program that shows potential industries where they can build the quickest, with the goal of attracting businesses and manufacturing plants that want to open as fast as possible. Mayor Andrew Halverson says it’s all about creating jobs, and Stevens Point is one of the cities that has applied.

Halverson says the recent annexing of the 777 acre Eastpark Commerce Center is well on it’s way to being ready for development in the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation’s “Certified in Wisconsin” program.  He says they have two issues to clear up before the development site can be accepted by the state and they can actively seek new businesses.  "There is an old oil tank associated with an irrigation pivot that's on one of the older areas of the site that needs to be remediated.  We're in the process of taking care of that.  As we do that, there is another letter that's waiting from the DNR relating to a potential endangered species may be present, again may be present along the railroad right-of-way.”

Halverson is both optimistic and excited to see this project accepted into the “Certified in Wisconsin” program, saying Stevens Point is strategically in a great position to attract new business.

The Eastpark Commerce Center project has been in the works for many months, and Stevens Point just annexed the property in October. Mayor Halverson anticipates completion of the final two issues and acceptance into the state’s program very early in 2013.

The land is immediately east of the Portage County Business Park, and is bordered by Highway HH to the south, County Highway R/Brilowski Road to the west, Burbank Road to the east, and the Canadian National Railroad to the north. Halverson believes the proximity to Minneapolis and Chicago, with freeway access on highways 10 and I-39, railroad service, and major utilities on the doorstep makes this business park very attractive.
