MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - A lot gets wasted during the holidays – and the Wisconsin DNR is encouraging folks to do what they can to be more efficient.

The federal government says the amount of household waste jumps by 25 percent from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve. A lot of it is from decorations that waste energy – plus the larger amounts of leftover food, disposable plates, packaging, and gift wrap that get thrown away.

The DNR encourages folks to keep washing their dishes and silverware, replace old holiday lights with today’s more energy-efficient items, and divvy up those leftovers among visitors.

They also say we could be a little greener in our giving. The DNR suggests gift cards, wrapping presents with newspapers and recycled paper, and saving gift boxes and bows so they can be used again.
