'Mortal Kombat: Legacy' Web Series Returns with Season Two

By Matt Patches, Hollywood.com Staff

Kevin Tancharoen, former Madonna choreographer and director of the 2009 Fame remake, took video gamers by surprise when he launched his gritty take on the mythology of Mortal Kombat in the web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy. Both a way to test the interest in MK while vying for a gig directing a feature version — which ended up working out for Tancharoen, who is slated to direct a new Mortal Kombat movie — Legacy reeled in a number of fans burnt by the previous cinematic incarnations of the universe, drawing in 60 million views online before hitting Blu-ray.

In a press release announcing the news, Warner Bros. Digital and Machinima hinted at what is to come from the series:

""In the second season the saga continues as Liu Kang and Ermac join the ranks of fighters introduced in the first season of the web series including Kenshi, Kung Lao, Kuai Lang, Stryker, Kitana, Mileena, Johnny Cage, Scorpion and Sub Zero. This new season will uncover the rivalries and histories of these fierce warriors as Raiden and his recruits clash against the dark forces of Outworld.""

What this means for Tancharoen's Mortal Kombat feature is unclear. Hollywood.com reached out to Tancharoen for comment, but he could not immediately be reached for comment. News broke in Sept. 2011 that the director was working with his original collaborators to bring a big screen MK to life, but since then there has been little movement on the project. It's an important project for WB, who has been attempting to revive the property since the critically-panned 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

Tancharoen's second series is expected to premiere in the second quarter of 2013 and will show off its first footage at this year's Streamy Awards, airing Feb. 17.
