MARSHFIELD, Wis. (WSAU) - What could be more appropriate than a memorial to our fighting men and women on Veteran’s Parkway in Marshfield? That’s what city council members Tom Buttke and Mike Feirer would like to see.
When a vacant warehouse on the parkway was demolished last year, the two men got the idea of using the remaining concrete slab as the foundation for a new Veterans’ Memorial, and Buttke says plans to build the new tribute have, “just taken off from there.”
When complete, the monument is expected to consist of a Howitzer cannon on loan from the military, an anchor, and an array of flags. Several custom-painted murals donated by artist Kris Leonardt from Owen will represent all branches of the military.
Buttke and Feirer say they plan on holding brat-frys and other fund-raisers throughout the summer, and would hope to have the memorial completed by late fall.
If you’re interested in helping fund the project, checks should be made out to the “American Legion Memorial Fund,” and designated to the Veterans Memorial Project, c/o Associated Bank, 400 S. Chestnut Ave, Marshfield, WI 54449.
