WIAA moves girls' state basketball tourney to Green Bay, boys' stay in Madison

STEVENS POINT, WI (WTAQ) - The WIAA has announced it will split the boys' and girls' state basketball tournaments for at least the next two years.

On Tuesday, the WIAA Board of Control decided to move the girls' tournament to the Resch Center for 2013 and 2014. The boys' tournament will remain at the Kohl Center in Madison through 2020.

There had been a scheduling conflict with the Kohl Center for the tournaments for the next two years to have two straight weekends available. One weekend - the second in March - is available, so the boys tournament remains at the Kohl Center.

Therefore, the girls' tournament was moved to the third week of March at the Resch Center.

The WIAA Board of Control voted in February to accept a bid and move the tournaments to Green Bay’s Resch Center, because of those scheduling conflicts involving the 2013 WCHA men's conference hockey tournament and NCAA Women's Frozen Four the following year.

The managing company at the Resch Center, PMI Entertainment’s bid for the basketball tournaments was for 5 years beginning as early as 2013.

Madison has hosted the boys' tournaments for over 90 years. The girls’ tournament had been in Madison since it began in 1976.

WIAA director Dave Anderson recommended the split decision – and the board unanimously okayed it.

WIAA officials could not say how long the girls’ tournament would be in Green Bay. They did not rule out having the event at the Resch Center after 2014 – but they did say there are no foreseen conflicts at Madison’s Kohl Center from then through 2020.
