Deer thrill kill suspect put in prison for 11 years

WAUPACA, Wis. (WRN) – A Waupaca County judge sentenced a man to 11 years in prison Tuesday for running down a half dozen deer with a snowmobile in 2009.

Judge Phil Kirk cited a continuing need to protect the public in handing down the sentence to 27-year-old Rory Kuenzi. Kuenzi pled no contest to three counts of felony mistreatment of animals and two counts of illegally possessing deer. Prosecutors dismissed several other charges as part of a plea agreement.

The sentence will run currently with a 23-year sentence Kuenzi is already serving for a 2004 hit-and-run death.

In explaining his sentence, Judge Kirk current sentence in the homicide case is being appealed and the 11-year in the deer slaughter case would ensure he's behind bars for a lengthy period regardless of what happens in the homicide case.

Cases are still pending against two other defendants for their involvement in the killing of five deer with snowmobiles in the Town of Lind in January of 2009.
