Bond lowered in shaken baby case

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAU) – A judge has lowered the bond for an Athens man waiting for a new trial on charges he killed his 4-month-old daughter in 2005.

Judge Vincent Howard said Quentin Louis can get out of jail if he puts up $50,000. His old bond had been $200,000. Louis' attorney has said his family can only raise $5,000.

Howard granted Louis a new trial in August 2009, ruling the jury that found him guilty in the “shaken baby” death of Madelyn Louis did not hear medical testimony that the girl's injuries might have other causes.

“The fact that the science has changed, that there is expert testimony willing to say that the old theories that were presented at the first trial no longer exist I think is a significant change,” Howard ruled late Monday.

An appeals court upheld the decision granting a new trial. The state Supreme Court refused to hear a request from prosecutors reviewing the appellate decision.
