Metal detectors no more at state capital

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsinites no longer have to walk through metal detectors to enter their State Capitol.

The devices were gone this morning, a day after the year’s controversial bills made it safely through the Legislature.

Six-of-the-eight Capitol entrances were locked in February. Police guards and metal detectors were set up at the other two doors during the massive protests over the bill to limit collective bargaining by most public employee unions.

The protests died down once that bill got through. But the security only got a little bit looser, while lawmakers passed the controversial state budget and its massive cuts in school aid and social programs.

The bill to let state residents carry concealed weapons also stirred emotions before the Assembly gave final legislative approval to the measure late yesterday.
